Pronouns: She/Her
Candidate for: Student Trustee
HEY ILLINI! My name is Gabi Stewart, I’m from Gurnee, IL, and a sophomore majoring in political science with minors in business and advertising. I’m so excited to announce that I am running to be your Student Trustee! At UIUC, I’ve served in several areas of student life, including as a Student Representative in Illinois Student Council, a Student Outreach Coordinator in the Student Trustee Office, and a Resident Advisor. In these positions, I’ve been able to connect with many of you about the concerns that affect our community. Within the student council, I’ve contributed to several initiatives impacting the student body and the greater Champaign-Urbana community. While in the Committee on Student Experience, we were able to address issues such as food insecurity and assist unhoused individuals in the community through monthly dining dollar food drives to the ARC food pantry. In addition to that, we also were able to administer a large-scale winter clothes drive and fleece knotted blanket making event, which were not only great for student engagement, but supported a meaningful cause. Outside of student government in my role as an RA, I’ve gained a fresher understanding for student life and student engagement. This role has its challenges, college is crazy, but students finding comfort in me while they’re away from home is an invaluable feeling. That’s what furthers my love and commitment to the student body, ensuring that in all areas of student life you feel heard and supported. If elected, I’ll be standing for the following platform stances: Freedom of speech, accessibility to food resources, inclusivity, and strengthening the bond between the Student Trustee Office and all of you. Freedom of speech is a focal point of this University, and we as students have seen how that’s been challenged. As Student Trustee, I’ll advocate for every student’s Constitutional right to free expression. Next, food resources are an important area that this campus has heavily supported. In my time in the Student Trustee Office, I’m leading an initiative to unite food resource organizations in CU to address shared challenges, and find a collaborative way to find solutions. I’d also like to see some healthier food options in our campus stores! Inclusivity in the UIUC community is an essential aspect of our campus and student life. I plan to reinforce relationships with the cultural houses and resource centers so they feel supported by all entities here. Lastly, my final goal is to create a strong bond with all of you! I want you all to not only be connected with the Student Trustee Office, but with me as well! I understand that student government can often feel very distanced, but I guarantee that I will strive to find creative ways to interact with all of you! In this light, I assure you all that I am a dedicated servant to the student body, and I would be honored to have the opportunity to serve you as Student Trustee!
