(He/Him)

My name is John “Carter” Blount. I am a current Freshman in the College of Applied Health Sciences here at the University of Illinois. I am from the Champaign-Urbana area and the University has been a key part of my life. Due to my rich past with the University I am filing to run for Senate because I believe the way to build lasting success at U of I is to extend a helping hand to all parts of our diverse campus. This means that all students should feel supported in their pursuit of professional opportunities, a strong social life, and the expression of their personal beliefs. The Student Council has a responsibility to make all groups feel safe on campus through careful coordination with the administration. As a Senate member, I pledge to work with the University in standing against targeted acts of violence and prejudice. Another focus is student success after college, I believe that the resources of the Student Council should be used to provide more postgraduate opportunities. To start, we will increase access to pre-professional clubs, host campus-wide networking events with potential employers, and make sure that students have the essentials. Even more so, the Student Council must be used to support student success while in college. This means ending food insecurity on campus - first by providing more meal tickets and giving free access to dining halls to those who need them. Finally, to create a more social campus we believe that each student should have the ability to choose their own direction and be supported by the University equally. As President, I will make sure to keep in strong contact with different parts of our campus, ranging from Greek Life to the Cultural Centers, to religious organizations and beyond. There are massive resources at our disposal, and they have gone to waste under past leadership. It is time to put the Student Council to work for the students.
