(He/Him)

I, Carter Cohen, am a political science student with a minor in philosophy and legal studies and a life goal of public service. Originally from San Diego, I am passionate about advocacy and hope to attend law school after graduation, using my JD to affect public policy in Washington. My candidacy is driven by a belief in the potential of collective action and representing all. During my time at UIUC, I've been actively involved in all aspects of our campus, ranging from Professional Organizations to Illinois Athletics, where I learned the importance of dedication, time management, and the issues that face UIUC students. My roots in San Diego, a city known for its melting pot of culture and ideologies, instilled in me a deep appreciation for representing all voices and issues. Seeking a position in the ISC Senate is an opportunity to create actual change and put into practice the theories and principles learned from our University to create tangible changes. My candidacy is not simply about holding a title; it's about using the voice of the students, advocating for their needs and concerns, and working collaboratively toward a more inclusive and empowering University. As an ISC Senator, I aim to increase the outreach of the ISC, reaching and affecting more students through its actions, drawing on my political science and philosophy background to approach these issues with a balanced perspective. I plan to draft specific policy changes, including expanding the UIUC's student safety. The current Safe-Walk program should be developed so all students are knowledgeable and able to use it as a vital resource. This service will be bolstered with an increased fleet of vehicles and trained staff, ensuring that any student, at any time of the day, can have a safe and secure means of transportation when walking alone is not safe. Recognizing the link between mental health and overall safety, we plan to integrate mental health resources into our safety initiatives. This includes increasing access to mental health services, easing the current backlog of appointments, ensuring that every student can receive timely and practical support in a confidential and compassionate setting, and ultimately fostering a safer and more resilient campus community. This position is about doing all aspects of a student representative to the best of my ability and serving diligently for my term. It's about what public service should be - doing the work without applause, just for the betterment of those you serve. As an ISC Senator, I will tirelessly work towards this vision, ensuring that every student's voice is not only heard but acted upon. Each voice is pivotal in shaping the UIUC we envision. Let's make our mark together, turning our collective aspirations into tangible realities.
