(He/Him)

Hello, I am William Gorski and I am proud to run for University Senator for the Graduate College. For some background, I am a junior and an accountancy major who will begin the masters program here next semester. I come from a small town called Lemont in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. On campus, I am a James Scholar and a Team Lead for Academic Peer Advising in the Success Lab. In my free time, I love to read, hang out with friends, and exercise. It’s time we find solutions to the problems that are impacting our student body and community. No matter how small an issue, we ought to challenge these issues for the betterment of our community. As your senator, I will be transparent about everything happening on campus and to always be open for suggestions and questions relating to school policy. While I have a campaign platform, I am amenable to all suggestions from our graduate community. One of the main objectives of the university is facilitating an environment for the best academic performance for its students. Students at our university regularly take courses that must be taken concurrently with other courses. It is unfair to have students take exams in concurrent courses at similar times as it jeopardizes performance. As senator, I will advise the Faculty Advisory Committee to produce exam schedules for courses within each college that minimize time constraints students often feel during exam times. This will allow for students to accurately present themselves academically to the best of their ability. Having a well-rounded education is important and general education requirements allow a student to explore interests they have not before. However, I am of the belief that this general education should be explored in high school while college should be focused on learning about your major and future career. General education requirements can often distract students from their major and do not provide the flexibility necessary to facilitate interests in other subject matters. As senator, I will advise the General Education Board to remove one of the Natural Science & Technology course requirements, remove the 200+ Level Humanities requirement, and merge Composition I and Advanced Composition into one requirement. These changes would allow for a more cost-effective experience for students at our university while still allowing them to explore other topics of interest. I have more ideas for how I would change the university for the better, but my final campaign objective I will present here is communication. As a representative of all graduate students, I need to represent every student, not just myself. I promise to try my hardest to listen to all concerns students may have. There are many ideas I have not addressed here, so if you have any concerns, questions, or recommendations for initiatives I should take on when elected, you can contact me at wgors2@illinois.edu. Thank you for reading my proposals and I would be honored to have your vote.
