Fatimah Shaikh

(She/Her)

My name is Fatimah Shaikh and I am a freshman studying Psychology, concentrating in Behavioral Neuroscience with an intention to pursue a Business minor. I am on the pre-medical track so I have involved myself in a pre-health fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Delta, and will begin volunteering at Carle hospital. In terms of RSOs, I have so far participated in Illini Thaakat Foundation, Muslim Student Association, and the Illinois Trial Team. I am hoping to join Illini Medical Screening Society this semester as well. Right off the bat, I have focused on making my undergraduate years an involved and fruitful one so I can benefit from the diverse opportunities UIUC offers. When I heard of the work SORF does, I was excited at the prospect of joining a group different from my usual extracurriculars. This position is a great opportunity to get involved in the Illini community that is different from my standard extracurriculars. The experience, although not directly affiliated to my career, will elicit skills in money managing, teamwork, and expose me to behind-the-scenes functions of our beloved UIUC RSOs. In fact, these clubs are the way I met my friends when I got to campus and I know my peers value their RSO experiences as well. To be a part of the group that works on money distribution which facilitates further events, celebrations, and strengthens our school pride, would be a practice in passing down the baton of tradition and enhancing future Illini’s involvement. If I were elected to the SORF board, I would contribute ideas regarding fund allocation that maximizes RSO events and opportunities for the student body. Apart from our courses, RSOs are the next best quality experience students remember as an integral part of their educational years. I want to give back to the community what it has given to me - a social network and a source of intellectual development. Through this position, I can expand my understanding of the different clubs on campus and which ones need more funding. I can also learn and value the funding going to RSOs I am personally involved in. It is an all around chance for growth and a more active role in the UIUC community. I am confident I will bring strong ideas to the table and build meaningful relationships with my peers.
